I don't respect the US elections at all. Trump only won in 2024 because of the two party monopoly. I think a lot of voters would have picked a serious populist if we were given multiple options. Trump only won because Biden became senile and Harris is just terrible.
At least based on what I know, the assassination attempt was real, but of an extremely poor quality (i.e. he didn't use the right kind of gun for the range and wasn't well trained, and he didn't get close).
The media conspired to make the assassination attempt seem much more serious than it really was.
Oh dear. As far as crazy Falun Gong claims go, that's right up there with the 'CEE CEE PEE' being shapeshifting aliens. Possibly less plausible and more fun.
I wish I understood Chinese AI culture better, because regardless of whether or not they have anything like doomer or singularitarian subcultures, if you're creating AGI, you are hastening the replacement of humanity with something else (whether that's AI-human hybrids, or an entirely AI civilization). Even the West can barely acknowledge this in any organized way, outside of the aforementioned SF-friendly subcultures (I include the more radical accelerationists under singularitarian). So if Chinese AI really is ruled by this pragmatic competitive-cooperative attitude, then maybe the more visionary awareness is confined to outright fiction-based cultures like SF fandoms (or even xianxia fandoms? since the xianxia I've read, is certainly capable of depicting extreme upheavals and world transformations).
I'm excited about the possibility of a Chinese company eventually competing with NVIDIA on high-end GPU manufacturing for neural network training. My understanding is that the biggest bottleneck for GPUs is moving information onto the GPU and off of the GPU. For language modeling, this is moving parameters on and off of the GPU. For images/video, it probably also takes a lot to move the data off of the GPU. Because of this, I wonder if competitive GPUs could be manufactured even if the semiconductors aren't quite state-of-the-art, as long as the systems-level design is sufficiently good.
My understanding is that NVIDIA has huge profit margins, so this could be a very profitable export business for a Chinese company.
For me, this was one of your best, most informative podcasts in a while.
As relates to He Jiankui, why the hell would Chinese officials give a damn about Western opinions on genetic engineering? I wish you would change your mind about supporting genetic engineering at your company. You are missing an opportunity to participate in what I believe is a revolutionary scientific movement that will further the ascent of humanity beyond most people's imagination.

Someone helped him to win by staging the obviously fake assassination attempt. All media went along with that.

Hi Steve interesting video. I recently stumbled upon a funny new conspiracy theory about China.
The lady in this video claims that the population of china is lower than 1 billion: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lTWh9rzW-Do
She makes a lot of anti-China videos so I don’t take any of her claims seriously but it made me laugh though

Great post!

Here is a U.S.-based company that is doing just that. https://heliospectgenomics.com/ You are probably aware of them.
